Common Causes for a Dental Emergency

Pediatric Dental Emergency

Broken/Chipped Tooth

Teeth can chip, break, or even be knocked out completely during sports, a fall or other type of accident. If your tooth has chipped, but you bring it with you to your appointment, it may be possible to reattach the pieces to your existing tooth or crown a broken tooth. We recommend that you make an immediate appointment, handle the tooth as little as possible to prevent additional damage and bacterial growth, and bring it with you to the appointment. Our experienced dentists at Carson & Carson, DDS will examine the tooth and your mouth and make the assessment whether it can be reattached. Call us today to get immediate toothache relief (805) 983-0717.

Gum / Tooth Pain

Severe pain coming from aDental emergency: persistent toothache tooth or gums can be a symptom of a larger problem. Our office has seen patients who have tried to cure their pain with home remedies that mask the pain rather than solving the underlying issue. When they finally come in, the problem has gotten so bad that more intensive treatment is needed. This can mean a root canal or other surgical process to get to the problem. When you are feeling pain in your mouth that won’t go away, make an appointment with Oxnard Dentists Carson & Carson to get the issue looked at and diagnosed. Don’t wait to get relief from the pain of a toothache, call us now for relief (805) 983-0717.

Oral Punctures

Oral Punctures can be caused by foreign objects like knives or picks, loose braces wires, or hard foods and can lead to open wounds in the cheeks, gums, or tongue that can bleed and get infected. If this is the case with your situation, contact our emergency dentists today so that we can take care of the issue before it gets infected or worse (805) 983-0717.

Dental Abscess

A dental abscess is a buildup of pus that forms in the gums or bone structures of the mouth. They can form below the surface of the gums, or appear as a growth protruding from the gums that may or may not cause pain. This type of dental infection can cause severe damage to gum tissue or teeth and usually requires treatment in the form of antibiotics or dentist intervention. When left untreated, an abscess can become a fluid-filled pocket of tissue known as a cyst and may require more aggressive treatment. Abscesses are common in individuals that have bad oral hygiene where tooth decay is allowed to run rampant. If you believe your toothache may be caused by a dental abscess, seek immediate treatment before the condition worsens.

Tooth Sensitivity

Sensitive teeth or dentin hypersensitivity can be caused by many underlying dental issues, but typically affect teeth where the roots or dentin layer have been exposed. Sensitive teeth can be extraordinarily receptive to exposure to hot & cold air, and acidic or sweet food. Hypersensitivity is most often caused by the erosion of the outer, protective enamel layer of the tooth or gum recession that leaves the tooth root exposed. In cases with light sensitivity, it may be possible to treat the hypersensitivity with a desensitizing toothpaste or fluoride gel that helps to rebuild enamel. In more severe cases where the tooth root has been exposed, a gum graft may be utilized to cover the sensitive root layer. For extreme cases where other treatments are not effectively reducing the sensitivity, a root canal or tooth extraction can relieve the issue.

Tips for Dealing with a Dental Emergency

There are some things that you can do immediately to reduce pain and the possibility of infection stemming from an oral emergency:

  • If your tooth has been knocked out, clean it gently in warm water, removing any dirt or tissue.
  •  Rinse your mouth with warm water to remove dirt or excess tissue.
  •  If you experience swelling or other facial trauma, apply a cold compress to the area.
  • DO NOT TAKE ASPIRIN. Aspirin is an anti-coagulate and can lead to excess bleeding. If you are in pain, take acetaminophen (like Tylenol).

If you have a wound that you believe to be immediately life-threatening, call 911 to get help. If you are experiencing pain to the gums, a toothache that won’t go away, or any other kind of dental issue, call Oxnard emergency dentists Carson & Carson at (805) 983-0717 and make an appointment. I have had a lot of procedures including 8 implants. There is no better dentist office than Carson and Carson. Dr. Derek Carson (the son of Dr. Leroy Carson) is FANTASTIC! He has learned well from his father (who still works there). Papa is the MAN!, and has been for years. Insane amount of knowledge. The Doctors are THE BEST! The support staff is fun and professional always. I will never go anywhere else.

Excellent service. Dr. Derek was the only emergency oral surgeon to respond, everything was done so fast and without pain. Highly recommended, Carmen is his amazing front office manager, she is highly professional and knowledgeable. I had very painful broken wisdom tooth removed. I can honestly say I have waited longer at the Starbucks Drive thru. Thank you!!!
